Contactless Transactions

Tap to Pay

What are contactless transactions?

Contactless payments are payments and withdrawals made by tapping either a contactless chip card or payment-enabled mobile, wearable device over a contactless-enabled payment terminal or ATM. Cards, phones, watches and other devices use the same contactless technology. When you tap to pay checkout is secure, convenient and touch-free.

Tapping to pay with your Visa® contactless chip card or payment-enabled mobile/wearable device is a secure way to pay because each transaction generates a transaction-specific, one-time code, that is extremely effective in reducing counterfeit fraud.

To make a payment, your contactless chip card or payment-enabled mobile/wearable device must be placed within 2 inches of the Contactless Symbol Contactless symbol located on the checkout terminal in order for the transaction to take place (so you can’t pay accidentally). You can also rest assured that Visa will protect your payment information from fraud losses and unauthorized purchases with Visa’s Zero Liability Policy*.

*Visa’s Zero Liability Policy does not apply to certain commercial card and anonymous prepaid card transactions or transactions not processed by Visa. Cardholders must use care in protecting their card and notify their issuing financial institution immediately of any unauthorized use. Contact your issuer for more detail.

Frequently asked questions about your new contactless card.

  • Are contactless cards safe?

Yes. Contactless credit cards are currently among the safest forms of payment. It’s incredibly difficult for a hacker to recreate the one-time code that contactless credit cards create for each transaction. Compared to magnetic strips that are more easily duplicated, contactless credit cards are much more secure. Here is an informative article that independently verifies these facts.

  • Where can I use my new contactless card?

Anywhere that accepts credit cards. If a register isn't contactless enabled, you can still swipe or insert your card. Contactless technology is supported by thousands of od merchants, including McDonald's, Starbucks, Subway, Trader Joe's, Walgreen's and Whole Foods.

  • Is my new contactless card as secure as my chip card?

Yes, your card still has chip protection. When used at a chip-enabled register, a unique code is created that changes each time you use your card.

  • What can I do to help prevent my contactless card from accidentally being charged?

While most vendors initiate purchases, it's important to make sure only one contactless device is close to the reader. So when using your CUofCO contactless chip card, please separate it from other contactless cards.

  • Can I use my contactless card for online purchases?

Yes. It still has a number, expiration date and security code like your previous cards.

  • Why is my new contacless card lighter and thinner

Our new cards are thinner because they are now made from upcycled ocean-bound plastic. It's just as durable as your old card.

  • Where do I sign my new vertical contactless card?

Unlike some other cards issued by Visa, our advanced technology has rendered the need for a signature obsolete. Therefore, please refrain from signing your card.
